The Use of Vicarious Learning in the Treatment of Sexual Concerns

  • Chapter
Handbook of Sex Therapy

Part of the book series: Perspectives in Sexuality ((PISE))

Abstract

This chapter presents a learning theory approach to sex therapy emphasizing the usefulness of observational or vicarious learning. The authors briefly discuss a rationale for the use of films, videotapes, books, and other media resources in the treatment of sexual problems. Indiscriminate use of these aids, however, can be countertherapeutic. Annon and Robinson have developed a conceptual scheme for determining the appropriateness of particular treatment strategies for particular patients at specific times, which they call the P-LI-SS-IT Model. The authors stress the importance of a thorough assessment to ensure effectiveness of treatment.

The issues raised in this article are especially timely. Therapists as well as the lay public seem to be succumbing to the rather naive view that merely being exposed to sexually explicit films or other media is somehow inherently therapeutic. This chapter also cautions against the trend for sex therapy to become a rigid set of procedures and techniques, rather than an individualized program for each particular patient.
