Fast-Beam (Beam-Foil) Spectroscopy

Abstract

Fast-beam spectroscopy (FBS) dates back to the discovery of canal rays, (1) the first technique for the production of fast ionic or atomic beams with particle velocities of the order of υ = 107-108 cm s-1. The corresponding apparatus consisted of a glass discharge tube with a gas pressure of about 10-1-10-2 mbar and a potential difference of a few kilovolts between the anode and cathode. The cathode filled the whole inner tube cross section and split the tube into two compartments (see Figure 1), which were connected only by a capillary hole drilled through the cathode, the so-called canal. Because of the sharp potential drop in a discharge close to the cathode, ions were accelerated onto the cathode surface so that some of them penetrated with high velocity through this canal into the other part of the tube. On their way, these so-called canal rays experience enough gas collisions for recombination and excitation so that light-emitting rays of moderately well-defined velocity leave the rear of the cathode.
