Bacterial Infections: Periodontal and Dental Disease

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 12))

Abstract

Infections in the myelosuppressed cancer patient are serious sequelae of both the natural disease as well as the chemotherapy used in its treatment. For example, infection is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) [1,2]. Prevention, recognition, and treatment of acute infections in the cancer patient receiving chemotherapy are critical to his/her quality and duration of life.
