A cardiac care unit is designed to accommodate critically ill patients with specific needs. Patients with a broad spectrum of problems such as unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction arrhythmia, cardiogenic shock, aortic dissection, pericarditis, tamponade, and cardiomyopathy must be cared for. Because of this varied population and because of the rapid evolution of complex technical treatment strategies, highly educated and trained nurse professionals are needed. This chapter is intended to aid in the design and administration of such a specialized and complex unit.
