Abstract
Currently it is estimated there are about 600,000 cardiac deaths per year in the United States1. Of these 400,000 are relatively sudden, i.e. unexpected and rapid, amounting to 1,200 per day and therefore almost 1 per minute. Half of these “sudden” deaths occur within one hour from the onset of symptoms and many of these are truly sudden, i.e. instantaneous. This is notably a “disease” of men with up to 4 times the incidence in women. Indeed, in young and middle-aged men it is the leading cause of death - amounting to about 1/3 of deaths.
