Abstract

There is a considerable literature concerned with symbolic play in children, and much of it is concerned with answering the question: What is the relationship between the ability to manipulate symbols as evidenced in play behaviour, and the development of language? This issue is clearly fundamental to the work of Piaget and Vygotsky.
