Abstract

In this section we review theoretical models of actinide compounds that are based on the assumption of 5 f electrons well localized on the actinide ions. In these theories the influence of the ions (and, where present, the conduction electrons) surrounding the actinide ion is treated as an electrostatic potential which perturbs the intra-atomic actinide potential. This is the crystal-field model, which has been very successful in explaining the magnetic properties of compounds of 3d transition metals and of the 4 f rare earths.
