Synopsis

Highly active catalyst systems suitable for the polymerization of methyloxirane have been prepared by reacting diethylzinc with a variety of group IVB organometallic compounds.

Triphenyl group-IVB-metal hydroxides, Ph3MOH (M = Sn, Pb), as well as group IVB organometallic oxides, sulphides and selenides of the type R2MX or R3MXMR3 (X = 0, S, Se) yield very active catalysts upon 1/1 interaction with Et2Zn. The reaction products of 2-hydroxyethyl (triphenyl group-IVB-metal)thiolates, Ph3MSCH2CH2OH (M = Sn, Pb), with Et2Zn represent a third group of very effective catalysts. The latter catalysts are particularly useful for obtaining high-molecular weight, highly crystalline poly(methyloxirane).

Attention is given to the characterization of these novel catalyst systems and to the elucidation of the nature of the catalytically active species. Physical and mechanical properties of some of the polymeric products obtained are reported.
