Behavioral Mechanisms in the Pathophysiology of Coronary Heart Disease

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO Conference Series ((HF,volume 19))

Abstract

Before we can consider the application of behavioral approaches in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of coronary heart disease (CHD) ╌ the central theme of this Section ╌ it is necessary to consider first the various means whereby behavioral factors appear to be playing a role in the etiology and course of CHD. In this chapter I shall first review the epidemiologic evidence indicating a role of behavioral factors in the precipitation of acute clinical events, the pathogenesis of the atherosclerotic plaque and the clinical outcome of relief of anginal pain with either medical or surgical management. Following this initial review, I shall consider the various physiological and neuroendocrine mechanisms whereby the associations shown in the epidemiological research might be mediated.
