Disorders of the Esophagus

Applications of Psychophysiological Methods to Treatment

  • Chapter
Psychophysiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract

The term functional has two specific definitions. One usage implies that a drsor-der is not physical and to many people this means that the disorder is illusionary or “only in one’s head.” However, to those who are involved in physiological investigations the term functional implies that there is no detectable primary structural abnormality and the problem is, therefore, physiological.
