Abstract
I do not think that an opening talk should subject you to a welter of detail, so I have chosen the tital, “What is an Alternative?”, as a rhetorical question giving me the excuse to develop a few thoughts which I feel are pertinent to our deliberations over the next two weeks. You have all probably come here with your own ideas as to the meaning of ‘an alternative fusion concept’ or ‘an unconventional approach to fusion’. There is a strong possibility that your ideas will not be in total agreement. If we are to make real progress in assessing the alternatives or unconventionals then it is necessary to understand and hopefully resolve any differences of interpretation.
