Abstract

Infections caused by the genus Shigella occur in every corner of the globe. The organisms are highly host adapted to the human species and a few other higher primates, and it appears that wherever these hosts exist, there too Shigella infections will occur, whether in the Arctic Circle or at the equator. However, the incidence and prevalence of infection, and its severity, are much greater in populations living in the developing world, undoubtedly in part because of a lack of adequate environmental sanitation and the high prevalence of concomitant malnutrition. In this special sense, shigellosis is a tropical disease, and this chapter attempts to address those features of the host, microorganism, and environment that combine to make this so.
