Mutagenicity of Selected Chemicals in Neurospora Crassa

  • Chapter
Comparative Chemical Mutagenesis

Abstract

A fairly recent review provides an excellent discussion of the research techniques used for Neurospora crassa (1). A section on mutagenesis and mutant selection is included, and many references, including earlier reviews of N. crassa, are cited. Of the numerous publications in which mutagens have been used in N. crassa, relatively few can be referred to as “mutagenicity” papers. Rather, mutagens were often used simply to induce mutants, which were then studied for other purposes. Among the publications in which study of mutagens was the major objective, a number of mutation-assay systems have been utilized in N. crassa, although the majority of the mutagenicity literature in N. crassa is from use of the ad-3 system developed by de Serres. The methodology of this mutation-assay system has been described in detail (2), and many references to the mutagenicity data obtained with this system are cited in this review. The main features of the ad-3 system are discussed briefly below.
