Abstract

The bone marrow derived circulating monocytes, together with the activated (effector) tissue cell-the macrophage, constitutes the Mononuclear Phagocytic System, (van Furth et al, 1972). Recognition of the MPS has considerably increased our knowledge of the processes of chronic inflammation and understanding of the body’s defence mechanisms.
