The Biological Significance of Isoenzymes

  • Chapter
Isoenzymes

Abstract

The biological significance of the occurrence of enzymes in multiple forms is a problem which has greatly interested biochemists during the past decade. At the present time it is impossible to do more than comment upon a number of more or less isolated observations on their metabolic roles and the conclusions which have been drawn from them. Most of these have been mentioned in earlier Chapters, and this concluding section is therefore restricted to a brief summary of some of the more important findings concerning the possible physiological functions of the heteropolymeric isoenzymes, particularly lactate dehydrogenase, the significance of genetically determined enzymes and finally the role of isoenzymes in metabolic regulation.
