The sports car in the future

  • Colin Campbell

However much we may hate them we cannot escape the consequences of exhaust emission regulations on the future of the sports car engine. American car manufacturers have staggered from one crisis to another as the Federal emission standards have been tightened in successive stages to levels that have resulted in the addition of catalytic converters containing expensive and not very durable materials, air injection pumps, exhaust gas recirculation devices and very complex fuel injection systems. To add to the driver’s misery some of these changes have resulted in poor drivability in traffic and an increase in fuel consumption.
