Abstract

The response of a fast streak camera to 400 psec.laser radiation passing through a stepped neutral density filter on the slits is used to determine the linearity and dynamic range of the combined camera, film and microdensitometer system. An input intensity range of two decades resulted in a dynamic range of less than one decade with a single 5 nsec. streak of a 400 psec. Nd+3 laser pulse. The range is limited on the low side by a background signal produced by flare in the camera from the brighter regions. Over several shots a total range of almost two decades is covered, where each segment is linear on a D—log E plot. However, the slope(γ) varies from 1.3 at high in—intensity to 2.3 at low intensity.
