Chemistry, Metabolism, and Transport of Hormones Controlling Insect Metamorphosis

Abstract

Since the changes in hormone titer must be precise if insect growth, development, and metamorphosis are to proceed normally, knowledge of the biosynthesis and degradation of the growth hormones as well as their possible control is of utmost importance if we are to understand metamorphosis at the biochemical level. Indeed, progress in this area of insect hormone metabolism and titer regulation has been remarkable during the past decade, particularly when compared to the less precise data accumulated on gland regulation (see Granger and Bollenbacher, this volume). In this chapter we will be concerned only with the three hormones known to control molting and metamorphosis, namely the prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) from the brain, the molting hormone (MH) (20-hydroxyecdysone) and the juvenile hormones (JH) secreted by the corpora allata (Fig. 1).
