Viral Hepatitis

  • Chapter

Abstract

Evidence of acute inflammation of the liver may be observed in association with infections due to a number of different viruses, e.g., members of the herpesvirus group, yellow fever virus, coxsackieviruses, mumps virus, and a group of exotic viruses.(162) The term “viral hepatitis,” however, is usually reserved for those infections due to one of at least three or more different and distinct agents collectively referred to as hepatitis viruses. These include the well-characterized hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV), associated with, respectively, viral hepatitis type A (previously infectious hepatitis) and viral hepatitis type B (serum hepatitis), and the less well-defined non-A, non-B hepatitis virus (es). The clinical manifestations of these infections are sufficiently similar so that until recently, the differential diagnosis of the individual case rested almost entirely on epidemiological information or inference. Several specific serological tests are now available for diagnostic and epidemiological studies of both type A and type B infections. Diagnosis of non-A, non-B hepatitis is still based on exclusion rather than specific serological tests, but the rapid and sustained developments in hepatitis research during the past ten years give promise for early resolution of this remaining area of confusion.
