Abstract
The material to be presented in this chapter addresses a number of academically disparate but conceptually related concerns. This, of course, is not an unusual circumstance for research in the area of intrinsic motivation; however, in order to facilitate presentation of the material, two principle themes will be developed. The first theme is the role of form and structure in aesthetic perception, and the contribution of information- theoretic approaches to our comprehension of these concepts. The second theme is the role of melody in music perception, and the contribution of the research in this area to a psychology of music in particular, and a psychology of art in general.
