Abstract

Joel Scherk died on 16 May, 1930 at the age of 33. His friends and collaborators miss him deeply. In spite of this relatively short life his impact on theoretical physics was great: he was a very fertile and original thinker. His name is connected with the beginnings of a number of ideas, and we would like to mention here a few of those which seem to have led to the most important further developments.
