Testing Strong and Weak Gauge Theories in Quarkonium Decays

We believe we may have discovered the right gauge theories of both the weak and the strong interactions. However, there is a whole class of processes in which the predictions of these gauge theories have hardly been tested at all. These are the flavor-preserving nonleptonic weak interactions, such as the weak contribution to proton-proton scattering. Being purely hadronic, these processes are weak interactions among quarks, modified by the QCD strong interactions which bind those quarks into hadrons. Thus, they are very difficult to calculate. Being flavor-preserving, these weak interactions have to compete with strong and electromagnetic interactions. Thus, they lead in general to very tiny effects which are almost impossible to see. Consequently, not very much is known about them, although we do have some information from the experiments on parity-violation in nuclei.
