What Does Moral Psychology Have to Say to the Teacher of Ethics?

Abstract

The psychological study of morality, like the teaching of ethics, has suffered fluctuating fortunes. Like ethics, the systematic study of moral development and behavior was largely neglected for much of this century. In recent times, however, both ethics teaching and moral psychology have made a comeback. Although it is safe to say that between the two disciplines there are ample opportunities for mutual learning, my assignment here is to look at half of that exchange. What does moral psychology have to say to the teacher of ethics?
