Abstract
When placed into a crystal a rare-earth (RE) ion experiences a crystalline electric field (CEF) which is set up by its neighborhood. This field may lead to a CEF-splitting of the lowest J-multiplet of the incomplete 4f shell. Any changes in the position of the neighboring ions e.g. via lattice deformations, result in changes in the CEF and hence in the energy splitting of the 4f shell. This implies a coupling of phonons to the 4f shell of RE-ions.
