Deep Inelastic Muon Nucleon Scattering: A Probe of Hadronic Structure

Abstract

Among the different ways of probing the nucleon structure, high energy muon-nucleon scattering plays an important role. As shown in Fig. 1a, the scattered muon interacts with the nucleon via the exchange of a virtual photon with the energy ν and the four momentum transfer squared q2. The emission of the virtual photon from the pointlike muon is exactly calculable in Quantum-electrodynamics. But the interaction of this virtual photon with the nucleon will strongly depend on the structure of the nucleon. If the nucleon consists of partons, the photon may interact with a single parton, especially at high values of q2, as shown in Fig. 1b.
