Abstract

A plot of the thermal conductivity vs. temperature for glasses shows a distinct “plateau” at temperatures between 1 K and 10 K. This indicates that strong phonon scattering processes set in at phonon frequencies above about 100 GHz. Several theories have been proposed.1,2,3 All, however, have been subject to some debate about the parameters necessary to fit the data.3,4
