Abstract
The FeR2S4 compounds (R = Yb, Lu and Sc) were previously described in terms of the direct spinel structure. In the case of R = Yb, two varieties are known: orthorhombic of the MnY2S4-type at low temperature and cubic of the spinel type at high temperature. There is a reversible transition at about 1000°C. In the orthorhombic structure, Fe has only an octahedral coordination.
