The Treatment of Single and Multiple Papillary Tumours of the Bladder (Ta/T1 NX MO)
Adverse change in stage or grade took place in only 34 out of a cohort of 275 superficial (T1) tumours followed over a minimum period of five years. In 37 cases Thiotepa was used in the immediate postoperative period after TUR or diathermy, and resulted in complete or near-complete clearance of the bladder in 30 (8l%). Failure to respond to Thiotepa in seven cases was accompanied by multifocal malignant change in the upper tracts invasion of the prostate or distant metastases. It is suggested that response to Thiotepa can be used as an early means of distinguishing the small but important subgroup of T1 tumours which require more than endoscopic treatment.
