Abstract

During the period 1962–1976 in the Urology Department of the University Hospital Leiden a total of 394 patients were treated for carcinoma of the transitional epithelium. From these, 13 patients had what we called primary carcinoma-in-situ. They were mainly detected by urinary cytology and a specific symptomatology of pain on micturition, urgency and frequency. When we compared these with the findings of 23 randomly chosen patients with papillary carcinoma grade II and III (Bergkvist) we found that there was a distinct difference in signs and symptoms.
