Abstract

The total protein concentration, as a percentage of total body weight, of the prenatal infant is about 8.5; it increases to about 11 at birth, further increases to a maximum of about 17.5 in the adult, and then declines with advancing age. The total amount of body protein follows a similar pattern. The amount of total-body protein present at any time represents a dynamic equilibrium between the rates of protein synthesis and protein breakdown. In order that there be a net accumulation of body protein, the set point at which equilibrium occurs between synthesis and breakdown favors synthesis. During the period of net loss of total body protein, the set point at which equilibrium occurs between synthesis and breakdown favors breakdown. Thus, there occurs over the life cycle an equilibrium set point which changes during growth, development, and aging.
