Scattering Experiments with Laser-Excited Atoms

Abstract

Techniques and results of measurements of differential cross sections for laser-excited Na atoms at thermal collision energies are described for mercury and argon as targets. For these examples the evaluation of the experimental data is described, including the determination of the potentials for the interaction in the 32P states of Na. In the calculation of the scattering process a close-coupling scheme is employed. The potential matrices for these calculations are obtained in the case of Hg from a pseudopotential calculation incorporated into the evaluation of the measurements, in the case of Ar from a modification of results from CI calculations given previously by other authors.
