Selection of Optimum Neutron Source Size for Neutron Capture Gamma Ray Borehole Analysis

Abstract

High-resolution gamma-ray spectrometers using 252Cf neutron sources are useful tools for mineral exploration by capture gamma-ray analysis in boreholes.1–2 When initiating an exploration program, one needs to know the optimum source size. Intuition suggests that the optimum source is the largest possible source that will not cause excessive paralysis of the counting circuits.
