Parity Assignments from High Resolution Neutron Scattering and M1 Radiative Strength in 208Pb

Abstract

Recently we have shown1–3 that the experimental determination of level parities by means of high resolution neutron scattering can be of extreme importance for the proper identification of ground-state electromagnetic radiations observed in the (γ,n) and (n,γ) reactions. In particular, our results for 207Pb(n,n) have established a firm basis for the identification of ground-state M1 radiation transitions from the unbound region of 208Pb, and an understanding of the distribution of M1 strength. Here we report preliminary results of high resolution neutron transmission and scattering measurements on 206Pb and their implications as regards the M1 radiative strength in 207Pb.
