Coherence Effects of the Electromagnetic Field Propagating in a Multimode Optical Fiber

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSB,volume 41))

Abstract

The behavior of the envelope of a pulse injected into a fiber is, in general, sufficient to characterize the electromagnetic field from the point of view of telecommunications. However, it is evident that the analysis of the field itself furnishes a much more detailed description and that its study gives more information on the fiber structure. Of course, the electromagnetic field is not practically observable at optical frequencies, its statistical behavior being described by a hierarchy of correlation functions.
