Abstract

Of the 357,000 practicing physicians in the country today, only 6840, or 2.2%, are black, although the nation’s 25 million blacks represent 12% of the total population. Nationally, there is one white physician for every 528 white persons, whereas the ratio of black physicians to the black population is 1 to 4100. Furthermore, at the present rate of entry of minority students into medical school, the optimal physician ratio will not be reached for another 20 years or more.1
