Mean Field Theory of Optical Bistability and Resonance Fluorescence
Most of the material of this notes is taken from a few papers which are enlisted in Ref. 1. Here we concentrate on a physical discussion, omitting the mathematical details. The aim of these lectures is to present and analyze a mean field model, which describes the dynamics of a system of two - level atoms driven by a coherent resonant field. On the basis of this model, we shall see that above a suitable critical density of atoms the system exhibits a bistable behaviour which concerns both the stationary situation and the transient, both the light transmitted in the forward direction and the fluorescent light. More specifically, we shall analyze several features of Optical Bistability and Resonance Fluorescence.
