Abstract

Permanent cardiac pacing has been utilized for many years in the management of bradyarrhythmias, but permanent pacing for different types of tachyarrhythmias has found only limited application thus far. Although successful temporary treatment of tachyarrhythmias was reported as early as 1964 [188S], and favorable long-term results have been described in individual patients [127R], less than 1% of new pacemakers were implanted for the treatment of tachyarrhythmias according to the latest world survey [202W].
