Abstract
Tachycardias in children are influenced markedly by the different cardiac electrophysiologic properties of the heart in the fetus, newborn, infant, and older child. Changes in autonomic tone, rate of impulse generation, and impulse conduction develop differently with increasing age [124D, 125D, 81F, 251, 106K, 116K, 156M]. Such age-dependent electrophysiologic properties in the presence or absence of associated congenital and acquired cardiac defects affect the clinical manifestations, the patient’s workup and response to therapy, and prognosis of pediatric patients with tachycardia.
