Abstract
The significance of word symbols is that much of our own behavior is governed by our internal speech, how we talk to ourselves. Our own words are our Pavlovian bells. In the delightful words of Fink (1953), “The uninformed stress the voluntary aspects of behavior. But among those who know psychology best, it is habits two to one.” A vocabulary of tension teaches tension. The person with a vocabulary of tension is in trouble if it is true that words are our map in time and place. Let us analyze some common maps drawn by the overly tense.
