Abstract
We all probably agree that the rapid progress in pharmacokinetics observed over the past decade has not been matched by a rapid development in our knowledge of the kinetics of drug action. The main reasons for this can probably be found in our limited ability to obtain precise pharmacodynamic data, especially in humans, and in the emphasis pharmacologists place upon the determination of qualitative and quantitative measures of effect rather than the kinetic aspects of the effects. However, with a combined knowledge of the pharmacodynamic events at the receptor sites and the pharmacokinetic properties of a specific drug we can learn quite a lot about drug action.
