Abstract

In the past decade we have gained a considerable understanding of multiphoton ionization (MPI) of alkali atoms, i.e., of single electron system.1 Presently the interest is turning toward the study of alkaline earth atoms which have two valence electrons outside closed shells. 1–8 The new aspect to be invested in these systems ids the effect of configuration interaction (CI) in MPI: alkaline earth atoms have many Rydberg series with different ionization thresholds corresponding to different excited core states of the inner of the two electrons, while the other one is in the Rydberg state. These doubly excited states, leading to perturbation of the Rydberg states in the bound region and series of autoionizing resonances above the first ionization threshold.
