Abstract
In the assessment of the psychological components of a pediatric condition, both informal and standardized procedures can be useful in understanding the impact of the condition on the child and the family. Both assessment processes imply an in-depth understanding of development and developmental issues as they relate to the child and the family. This chapter focuses on developmental considerations, but development itself must be viewed in the context of the family, environment, and culture. The importance of an ecologic approach is stressed in chapters that follow.
