Abstract
When I first sat down to write this chapter, I found myself half consciously drawn to the lowest shelf of a nearby bookcase. On that shelf, I have some treasured textbooks from my early training in behavior modification. I can remember with great warmth the energy that seemed to pervade behavior therapy in the middle and late 1960s. Although I am sure that a significant portion of my memory must be colored by the associated personal phases in my life, I do not think that historians of behavior modification would disagree with the assertion that the 1960s were expansive and exciting times. We were onto the “laws of learning.” We were in search of the “principles of human behavior,” and it seemed only a matter of time before we would be relieving millions of people of their unnecessary sufferings and self-limitations.
