The Melting Temperature of Polymers: Theoretical and Experimental

  • Chapter
Book cover Analytical Calorimetry

Abstract

The equilibrium melting temperature, Tm°, of a crystalline polymer, the melting temperature of a perfect crystal of infinite molecular weight, is a very important parameter. It reflects not only the molecular and conformational characteristics of a chain but when used in analyzing crystallization kinetics yields the interfacial free energy for nucleation. A difference of only a few degrees in Tm° can be significant in establishing basic crystallization mechanisms. Despite the importance of this melting temperature its direct experimental determination has proven to be very elusive. Consequently, recourse has been made to theory and to the development of extrapolative procedures of experimental data.
