Study on Adhesives Performance by Dynamic Mechanical Techniques

  • Chapter
Analytical Calorimetry

Abstract

Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA’s) are evaluated by several key performance tests: tack, shear adhesion (holding power), peel, and for melt processed systems, their molten viscosity. Tack measures the debonding mechanical forces after a momentary contact where shear adhesion is determined by the resistance to shear creep. Tack can be measured by the stopping distance for a rolling steel ball with a known amount of initial kinetic energy, or alternately by a probe tack tester measuring the peak debonding normal force on a fixed area probe surface. Shear adhesion is frequently measured as the time of failure for a given adhesive surface area loaded under shear.
