Abstract
In this chapter we consider an important biomedical area—that of stress underwater—beginning with a discussion of the general nature of stress; factors that contribute toward stress problems in diving; the effects of variables such as cold, exercise, and fatigue (particularly as they relate to cardiovascular problems and performance); diving accidents; and, as an ultimate potential event to which all these factors contribute, the problem of diver panic, which is implicated in many if not most of the fatalities among recreational divers.
