Abstract

Cardiac defects have been detected in about 54% of diagnosed cases of fetal alcohol syndrome. A summary of the frequency of occurrence of cardiac disorders in 305 fetal alcohol syndrome patients is presented in Table 20. The most common anomalies are septal defects, especially ventricular septal defect. In most instances, however, these septal defects are small and are not life-threatening, and they frequently close spontaneously. Interestingly, ventricular septal defect is also the most common anomaly in mice prenatally exposed to alcohol.7,8
