Abstract

The most convenient classification of low molar mass liquid crystals (LC) refers to the constitution of the mesogenic molecules1 : Non amphiphilic LCs, which are characterized by a rigid rod like molecular structure and amphiphilic LCs, which consist of molecules having a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic part. The non amphiphilic as well as the amphiphilic mesogenic molecules have become of interest as monomers for the synthesis of polymers, which have attached the mesogenic molecules to a polymer backbone as side chains (Fig. 1).
