Orientational Order in Binary Mixtures of Nematic Liquid Crystals

  • Chapter
Liquid Crystals and Ordered Fluids

Abstract

Simple molecular field theory is used to examine the nematic-isotropic transition in binary mixtures of nematic liquid crystals. Using an extended Maier-Saupe model, the nematic-isotropic coexistence region can be determined for the entire range of concentrations; the extent of this region is determined by the ratio of transition temperatures and of the molar volumes of the constituents. The order parameters of the two nematic components can be obtained separately; these can be significantly different and lead to non-ideal behaviour in nematic mixtures. Predictions of the theory are compared with experiment, and new experimental results for two binary systems are presented.
