Abstract
Historically, there has been a division of labor between professionals regarding rehabilitation and prevention of alcohol abuse. Clinicians tend to concentrate their efforts on rehabilitation of individual problem drinkers. To clinicians, prevention of alcohol problems may seem like an ideal but not very realistic goal, and many view prevention as beyond their realm. Conversely, those who work in the prevention area may believe that clinicians are ranging too far afield when they show an interest in prevention. These professionals (e.g., sociologists, anthropologists, demographers, and social psychologists) could resent what they might see as “interference” by clinicians.
